A typical renovation project has a homeowner, a general contractor, 4-6 subcontractors, and a building inspector — all communicating through fragmented channels. Payments are missed, changes aren't documented, and disputes are common.
The contractor side of the market is underserved by software. Most contractor apps are built for the office — not for someone wearing work gloves in poor lighting with a 4G signal and a 5-minute break.
Me3mari's founders wanted to fix the contractor-homeowner trust gap. The product needed to make every stage of a project visible, documented, and agreed upon — reducing disputes and accelerating payment.

We ran on-site field research with 16 contractors and 24 homeowners across 8 active construction projects. The UX constraints were extreme: tap targets 2x normal, high-contrast mode for outdoor lighting, one-tap key actions, and offline-first for everything that happens on site.

The homeowner and contractor apps are Flutter — built for gloved hands, outdoor lighting, and intermittent connectivity. The web app (for project managers and homeowners on desktop) is Next.js. All surfaces share a Node + PostgreSQL backend with a document store for photo and drawing uploads.

We chose the boring, battle-tested options where it mattered and innovated where it gave the product a real edge.
We used to lose 10-15% of project revenue to disputes and late payments. Since Me3mari, our average payment delay is 3 days and disputes are almost zero.
What it took.
- Offline-first in a document-heavy domain. Drawings, photos, and contracts are large. We built a selective sync system — critical project data syncs in full, large documents cache on demand, and uploads queue in the background when signal allows.
- Payment escrow integration. Integrating Stripe Connect for escrow required custom payout logic for multi-party construction contracts (GC takes a cut, subs get direct payments). We built a payment orchestration layer that handles split payments, retentions, and disputes.
- Role-based data isolation. Subs should not see the GC's margin. Homeowners should not see contractor cost breakdowns. We built a role-scoped data model where every API response is filtered by the caller's project role.
- UX for outdoor, gloved use. Standard mobile UX fails in bright sunlight and with gloves. We built high-contrast mode, 2× minimum tap targets (60×60px), and voice-note photo annotation — field testing with working contractors in real conditions.
