A community app that turns daily eco habits into a game worth playing.
Planet Matters makes sustainable living competitive, social, and addictive — in the best way. We built the gamification engine, community features, and impact tracking that turned a solo habit tracker into a social movement with 40,000 active users in three months.
Environmental apps suffer from the same problem as most wellness apps: they're used for a week, then deleted.
Environmental apps suffer from the same problem as most wellness apps: they're used for a week, then deleted. Users feel virtuous for downloading, track a few habits, then disengage. The problem isn't intent — it's that solo habit tracking is lonely and the feedback loops are too slow to feel meaningful.
Planet Matters' founders had a thesis: sustainability needs social accountability and visible community impact. Individual actions need to aggregate into something people can see and share. The product had to make the collective carbon impact visible in real time.
They came to Fusionwave post-seed with a clear vision, an active waitlist, and a 14-week runway to app stores. The gamification engine had to be built right the first time — retention mechanics that are poorly designed can't be patched later.
Make it a game. Make it matter.
We ran 10 co-design sprints with environmentally engaged 20-35 year olds. The design principles that emerged: visible collective impact, social accountability without shame, and challenge mechanics that escalate gradually to keep long-term users hooked.
Gamification at scale.
Flutter handles both iOS and Android. The gamification engine runs server-side in Node.js — points, streaks, challenges, and leaderboards are processed with sub-100ms response times even at peak (Monday mornings). Community carbon totals are computed in real time.
What ships in the product.
Daily habit challenges
Four categories: transport, food, home, and shopping. Challenges escalate in difficulty as users progress through levels.
Community leaderboards
City, country, and global leaderboards with weekly resets. Top 10 get 'Eco Champion' badges — coveted by regular users.
Real-time carbon counter
A live counter shows the community's collective CO₂ saved today, this week, and all time — updated every 60 seconds.
Streak engine
Daily streaks with visual fire animations at 7, 30, and 100 days. Missed a day? A 24h grace period saves streaks for premium users.
Friend circles
Create private groups with friends or colleagues. Share challenges, compare streaks, and call each other out.
Impact certificates
Monthly and annual certificates showing your personal CO₂ offset, shareable to social media with verified methodology.
Corporate challenges
B2B tier where companies run 30-day sustainability challenges for employees. Leaderboards, prizes, and ESG reporting included.
Habit science library
Each habit category includes a short science explainer — why it matters, how much it helps — to reinforce engagement with meaning.
Verified offset marketplace
Earned points can be converted to certified carbon offsets from vetted projects. Integrated with Gold Standard registry.
Production-grade from week one.
We chose the boring, battle-tested options where it mattered and innovated where it gave the product a real edge.
We hit 40,000 monthly active users in our third month. The collective impact counter is the feature that keeps people coming back — people want to see the number go up.
What it took.
- Gamification that doesn't feel manipulative. We ran an ethics review on every retention mechanic. Streaks with grace periods, no dark patterns on streak restoration, and challenge difficulty that scales with real progress — not artificial friction.
- Carbon calculation at scale. Each habit type has a different carbon methodology (lifecycle analysis for food, emissions factors for transport). We built a carbon engine validated against peer-reviewed datasets — and published the methodology publicly for credibility.
- Community moderation. A social platform needs moderation from day one. We built AI-assisted flagging, a community reporting tool, and a tiered response system — auto-hide for obvious violations, human review for edge cases.
- Corporate tier without alienating consumers. B2B buyers needed admin dashboards and CSV exports. Consumer users needed the app to feel personal and ad-free. We built the corporate tier as a separate management portal — the employee experience is identical to the consumer app.
